Scholarship Tips

Searching for and applying to scholarships can be both time-consuming and challenging. To make the most of your efforts, it’s important to take some preparatory steps before diving into your search. Remember, planning ahead is crucial!

  1. Plan ahead: Create a schedule and use a calendar to meet application deadlines.

  2. Write a strong essay: Keep persuasive and informative essays from high school on hand to use as a starting point. Be sure to have someone edit it! (Ask an English Teacher)

  3. Apply for multiple scholarships: The more scholarships you apply for, the better your chances of receiving one.

  4. Demonstrate academic excellence: Scholarship winners typically have strong academic credentials.

  5. Gain experience: Job Shadow or seek a mentor.

  6. Grow your leadership portfolio: Take on leadership roles in school (SGA, NHS, Etc.) or community clubs.

  7. Fill out the FAFSA: The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is an application for grants and loans from the federal government. The state of Florida's deadline for the FAFSA is May 15.

  8. Create a Resume: Develop a resume that highlights your educational achievements or work experiences. Keep a log or folder documenting your activities, travels, connections, and lessons learned.

  9. Request Reference Letters Early: Start gathering reference letters from your minister, employer, teachers, guidance counselors, coaches, and babysitting families. Make 10-15 copies of each letter and have them signed individually. Store them in the same folder as your resumes.

  10. Focus on scholarships that fit you best: Use resources like the NSHSS scholarships page to find the right match. Still, don’t overlook opportunities you might qualify for, even if they seem like a longshot.

Remember, any scholarship that you earn can help significantly reduce your college expenses. Good luck!

Where to look for Scholarships

Check with Your College: Reach out to the college you plan to attend to inquire about any scholarships they offer. Most colleges and universities provide a variety of scholarship options.

Utilize Internet Searches: There are millions of scholarships available online. However, keep in mind that many resources cater to specific colleges, majors, or have other restrictions. Additionally, the high volume of applicants for online scholarships often reduces your chances of receiving one.
