Math Night at Publix: Where Learning Meets Real Life!

Last night, our K-6 students and their families turned grocery shopping into a math adventure, and what an incredible night it was! Hosted by our wonderful partners at Edgewater Publix, this event combined real-world math skills with hands-on learning, proving once again that numbers are everywhere—even in the grocery aisles!

From Classroom to Checkout: The Math Night Experience

As families arrived, students were handed a special assignment—each received a starting aisle, a clipboard with a series of math tasks, and a party to plan at the end. Their ultimate challenge? Plan a party for 24 people while sticking to a $50 budget. Sounds easy, right? Not quite!

Students had to ensure they had enough of each item for every guest while carefully checking prices, sizes, and deals to stay within their budget. They compared unit prices, calculated costs, and made strategic decisions about what they needed versus what they wanted—all while navigating the aisles like savvy shoppers!

Math, Teamwork, and Real-Life Problem Solving

Throughout the evening, students could be seen eagerly adding up totals, discussing the best choices with their parents, and even double-checking their math before heading to the next item. It was amazing to watch their enthusiasm as they discovered that math isn’t just about worksheets—it’s a part of everyday life!

And the best part? They weren’t just having fun—they were truly learning. Budgeting, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction all came into play, making this experience both engaging and educational.
